Zeybek calls for urgent action on healthcare crisis

İskeçe’s New Left MP Hüseyin Zeybek has brought the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT) Medical Associations' report to parliament, highlighting the worsening state of healthcare services in the region. The report points to severe staff shortages and financial constraints, which have led to a decline in medical care quality.

Key Issues in Regional Hospitals
📌 Doctor Shortages: Hospitals in Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç), Komotini (Gümülcine), and Drama face a critical lack of internists and other key specialists, limiting access to healthcare for residents.

📌 Overburdened Emergency Services: Drama and Xanthi (İskeçe) Emergency Units (TEP) are struggling due to a lack of personnel, putting patients at risk.

📌 Overworked Medical Staff: The insufficient workforce means that doctors and nurses are facing excessive workloads, leading to service disruptions.

📌 Anesthesia & Staffing Issues: While Kavala Hospital appears well-staffed, it frequently has to transfer doctors to other hospitals, reducing its efficiency. Doctors from Drama and Komotini’s anesthesia departments are often reassigned to Xanthi, disrupting services.

📌 Alexandroupoli Hospital Struggles: Despite serving a vast rural area, Alexandroupoli Hospital continues to lose doctors, and the Health Ministry has failed to fill vacant positions.

Urgent Call to the Ministry
Zeybek emphasized that the Greek Health Ministry has neglected Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, bringing the regional healthcare system to the brink of collapse.

During his parliamentary intervention, he urged the government to take immediate action on the documented issues and inform the public about the measures being planned.

⚠️ “Access to healthcare is a fundamental right for all citizens. People in border and rural areas must receive equal medical services,” he stressed.
