Turkish MPs react to Metropolitans
Turkish Minority MPs Hüseyin Zeybek, Burhan Baran and İlhan Ahmet reacted to the Metropolitans opposing the mufti elections throughout their social media accounts.

Firstly, deputy Zeybek made the following statement on the subject from his social media account:

“In the statements made by Alexandroupoli Metropolitan Mr. Anthimos to ERT Orestiada regarding the election of the Mufti and in the reference made about me, the expression “Minority Deputies are against the Mufti election” does not reflect the truth.

Both as a Member of Parliament and as a permanent member of the inter-Party committee, I have always taken a position in favor of the election of the Mufti and the Foundation administrations. In fact, the Treaty of Lausanne also mentions the election of Mufti. I would like to remind Metropolite that the election of mufti is a democratic and religious right of the minority. I would also like to state that I do not agree with Mr. Metropolitan's statements regarding mosques and our religion.”

Then, Movement for Change (KINAL) Rodop MP İlhan Ahmet and Xanthi MP Burhan Baran issued a joint press statement on their social media accounts regarding the statement of Alexandroupolis Metropolitan Anthimos targeting Minority MPs and containing false accusations.

Joint press release of deputies against the statements of Alexandroupoli Metropolitan Anthimos, who made accusations against minority deputies is as follows:

"We listened with surprise and disappointment to the latest statements made by Alexandroupolis Metropolitan Anthimos on the state radio. These statements, which refer to our view on the mufti election in Thrace, do not reflect the truth.

We advise Mr. Anthimos to express only his personal views, without interpreting the views of others. Because, although this is a wrong move and a wrong interpretation, it is also against the rules of respect and decency.

We, of course, are in favor of the final solution of the mufti issue in Thrace, in accordance with the treaties, in line with the free will, preference and will of the Minority, without hindrance.

Moreover, it is unacceptable to attempt to shape and interfere with the institutional issues of the Supra-Party Commission, which are related to the Minority, by external institutional actors outside the Parliament.

In other words, these institutional actors cannot replace the Parliament, parties and elected representatives at all levels, and we would like to make this clear here. These interventions in matters of religious freedom are unlawful and offend our Minority.

We also declare again that it is an urgent and inevitable need to include these demands, which constitute the real will of our compatriots, in the final report of the Inter-Party Commission.

With all due respect to the public."
