Traffic restrictions on Egnatia Highway for pavement testing

Temporary traffic measures will be in place along a 40-kilometer stretch of the Egnatia Highway in Northern Greece from October 14 to 17 and again from November 4 to 14, to allow for pavement condition testing, authorities announced Friday.
According to the Rodopi Police Directorate, the restrictions will affect both directions of the highway between the Yassıköy (Iasmos) Interchange (km 545.6) and the Meşe (Mesti) Interchange (km 591.7).
The tests will be conducted using two specialized devices: the Grip Tester, which operates at 50 km/h to measure road friction, and the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD), which requires brief stops every 200 meters to assess pavement strength.
The following traffic arrangements will be implemented during the testing period:
Temporary closure of the right or left traffic lane.
Partial closure of the right and middle lanes in one direction at a time, with traffic redirected to the remaining open lane.
Speed limits will be reduced to 90 km/h in the affected zones.
The work zones will be mobile due to the short duration of the measurements, eliminating the need for permanent road markings. A support vehicle equipped with lane guidance equipment will accompany the testing team to direct traffic around closed lanes.
Authorities emphasized that the highway will remain open throughout the testing period, with no full closures. Temporary signage will be in place to inform and guide drivers safely through the affected areas.
The works are being coordinated with the Gümülcine (Komotini) Traffic Police to prevent disruptions due to local events, adverse weather conditions, or emergencies.
