A nine-year-old boy lost a finger after a firework exploded in his hand on New Year’s Eve in Arabacıköy (Amaksades) Rodopi.

The incident occurred in the settlement of Arabacıköy (Amaksades) of the Municipality of Yassıköy (Iasmos) in the Rodopi region. The child was taken to İskeçe (Xanthi) General Hospital, where doctors performed lengthy surgery that resulted in the amputation of the index finger on his left hand.

He also sustained eye injuries, though doctors said they managed to save his eyesight.

The boy is expected to be discharged from hospital on Saturday (today).

Police in Yassıköy (Iasmos) are continuing a preliminary investigation to determine the circumstances of the accident, including how the firework came into the child’s possession.
