Three new UK air links to boost tourism in eastern Macedonia and Thrace
Three new air connections from the United Kingdom will be added to the flight programme serving eastern Macedonia and Thrace through Kavala Airport, local officials said.
The routes will be operated by UK-based carrier J2, which specializes in transporting birdwatching tourists to destinations of environmental interest, including areas in Greece.
Local officials said the new connections are expected to support alternative tourism and attract more nature-focused visitors to the region.
They also announced that a new study will be launched to determine the zoning of activities around a local lake and pave the way for the introduction of low-impact tourism initiatives, subject to approval by the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (OFYPEKA).
The planned actions aim to promote the area’s natural assets, strengthen sustainable tourism and create opportunities for younger residents through tourism-related employment.
Officials expressed optimism that the summer 2026 tourism season in eastern Macedonia and Thrace will develop satisfactorily despite challenges stemming from ongoing geopolitical tensions and rising living costs.
