"The mayor's crime is very big" says Turkish Minority MP

In a statement to MİLLET newspaper Xanthi ZİRİZA Deputy Hüseyin Zeybek condemned the attack on the Muslim Turkish cemetery in Petinos (Horozlu). He said that Mayor Giorgos Tsitiridis was responsible for the destruction of the cemetery and that he was guilty. “Mr. Mayor's crime is very big. No apology covers it or anything else.” Zeybek said.

The statement of Deputy Hüseyin Zeybek to MİLLET newspaper is as follows:

“This morning we learned with big sadness that the Municipality of Avdira (Bulustra) has put working tools in the cemetery and destroyed the existing cemetery.

Of course, he brought it to the council board meeting yesterday. We heard about this from our council members. They stated that a park and a football field will be built in this area. I called the mayor immediately. I told him that he made a big mistake. He replied to me. ‘No, this is our property.’ As you know, since 1970, unfortunately, there are not many of our minority families left in our village of Horozlu (Petinos). Our last living citizen passed away about a month ago.

The mayor does not deny that this is a cemetery. Yes, it can belong to the municipality, but the municipality cannot do whatever it wants here. Of course, we also had initiatives in Athens. We got similar response from there also. We understood that Athens was not informed about the issue. We informed them. They said that even though it was transferred to the municipality’s property, it was still a cemetery.

Thereupon, we took initiatives. We called and informed the Ministry of Interior and National Education. Of course, as a result of our attempts, we found out that the transactions stopped. But here we see that there is a wreck. A date has gone. So the past, the history has gone.

In other words, we see that the tombs of our people from the Ottoman period have disappeared.

You know, the easiest way to destroy history is to destroy historical ruins.

Today, Avdira Municipality has shown great disrespect to both our past and our dead. It has to pay the price in every way. I said before. He destroyed a legacy. He destroyed a relic that existed here. This does not satisfy us. Of course, the attitude of the bureaucrats in Athens towards us was very different. They, too, strongly objected, so we sent the news articles and photographs published in the press.

We filed a criminal complaint with Mr. Burhan Baran at the prosecutor's office. I said before. A past has gone. So this is the point that upset us.

I've been here before. We came here at the beginning of the relevant work. This place was in a very different situation. You see now there is nothing left.

I don’t know what to say. The mayor’s fault is very big. Even an apology does not cover this."
