Samothrace journalism conference set to bring together reporters and academics

The 19th Samothrace Journalism Conference will take place from September 25 to 27, bringing together journalists, academics, researchers and students from schools in Greece's border regions on the island of Samothrace.

The conference is being held under the auspices of Greek President Konstantinos Tasoulas and with the support of Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis.

Co-organized by the Panhellenic Federation of Journalists' Unions and the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, the annual event has developed into a forum for discussion on issues affecting journalism and the wider public sphere.

This year's conference will feature 45 speakers and 150 journalists selected by lottery from journalists' unions across Greece.

Language and environmental crisis at center of discussions
The 2026 conference will focus on two main themes: the relationship between the Greek language and journalism, and the environmental crisis and its implications for the media.

Organizers say the discussions will examine the role of journalism in protecting and developing the Greek language, while also addressing the responsibility of the media to provide accurate, responsible and evidence-based information about the environmental crisis and its consequences.

The conference will also address broader questions surrounding press freedom, media independence and the credibility of journalistic discourse at a time of rapid technological and social change.

Organizers describe the event as an open forum for discussion rather than simply a gathering for members of the journalism profession.

The conference will be held on the island of Samothrace (Samothraki), in the regional unit of Evros, and those unable to attend in person will be able to follow the proceedings online. Details of the livestream are expected to be announced in the coming days.
