Police warn against new phone scam involving fake “accountants”

A new wave of phone scams has been reported in İskeçe, where fraudsters posing as accountants attempt to trick unsuspecting citizens into handing over personal banking and tax information.

In some cases, victims resisted and refused to hand over money. However, others came close to losing significant amounts. According to posts shared on social media, the so-called “fake accountants” use various pretexts, claiming they need citizens’ tax or bank login details in order to process supposed tax refunds.

Police Response

The Hellenic Police have issued a warning to the public, reminding citizens:

Do not trust phone calls related to financial transactions, even if the caller presents themselves as an “accountant” or “tax consultant.”

Immediately contact family members to verify the claims.

Report any suspicious calls directly to the police emergency line (100).

Prevention Tips

Never hand over money or personal documents to strangers at your doorstep.

Do not trust bank account details provided over the phone.

Always contact your real accountant or the family member mentioned in the call.

Inform elderly relatives about this new scam method so they can be prepared.

The so-called “accountant method” is the latest tactic in the arsenal of phone scammers. Local communities in İskeçe, and across Greece, are urged to remain vigilant. Awareness, caution toward suspicious calls, and immediate contact with the authorities can prevent further scams and protect the most vulnerable citizens.
