PAE Xanthi withdraws from Super League 2

PAE Xanthi informed Super League 2 of their decision to leave the minor league championship in a letter.

PAE Xanthi announced on Monday 19 September that it was withdrawing from Super League 2. Officials have sent a document to the league organizing committee containing the team's decision to withdraw from the league.

Xanthi sent the letter announcing its withdrawal from the league to the Greek Professional Football Federation and the Federation was requested to fill the gap. According to the results of last year, Ilioupoli qualified to compete in the second league instead of Xanthi.

Xanthi-Xanthi football team competed in the Greek first league for 32 years. Appeared in European cups. Played the Greek cup final.

20 years ago, on September 19, 2002, Xanthi team faced Italy's Lazio team at Olimpico. 20 years later, he announced his retirement from the league on September 19, 2022.

Xanthi, which had always guaranteed to stay in the league under the powerful president Panopulos, started to collapse when Panopulos sold the shares of the team. When Greek-Australian businessman Bill Papas, who bought most of the shares, suspended all payments since January, his shares were frozen and Xanthi was announced to be relegated to the amateur relegation.

As it will be remembered, Xanthi football team played for a short time in the first league together with Kavala, Drama and Panthrakikos in Komotini. However, it took its place in history as one of the rare teams in Greece, which did not relegate from the first league for 32 years.
