A strategic partnership with mutual benefits for the Regions of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT) and the Ionian Islands was officially sealed on Monday, October 13, 2025, in Brussels.

The Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Christodoulos Topsidis, and the Governor of the Ionian Islands, Mr. Ioannis Trepeklis, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation aimed at fostering joint initiatives within the framework of EU-funded programs and projects.

The cooperation seeks to pursue European funding opportunities, promote shared regional interests, create collaborative networks, and monitor EU policies relevant to both regions. The memorandum will be in effect for 24 months, with the possibility of extension or renewal through a new agreement.

The signing ceremony took place at the EMT Regional Office in Brussels, which will serve as the operational hub for collaboration between the two regions.

Governor Christodoulos Topsidis stated:

“Today marks the beginning of an active and creative partnership with the Region of the Ionian Islands, grounded in the exchange of know-how, joint policy shaping, and strengthening the voice of Greek regions in Brussels. Our EMT Office in the heart of Europe now assumes an even more central role as a hub for cooperation and development. With faith in our region’s potential and strategic alliances like this one, we are working to deliver tangible results for our citizens and to shape a stronger future for both regions.”

Governor Ioannis Trepeklis added:

“The signing of this memorandum with the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace marks the start of a strategic collaboration with substance and perspective. We firmly believe in the power of partnerships built on shared needs and visions. Through this cooperation, we strengthen our European presence, create new opportunities for our local communities, and establish a framework to support sustainable and innovative initiatives. I am confident that this joint effort will yield fruitful results for the citizens of both regions.”
