MP Zeybek raises regional railway connection issue in Parliament

Following statements made by Infrastructure and Transport Minister Staykuras regarding the country's railway network, MP Zeybek demanded an end to the longstanding suspension of railway connections in Xanthi and the entire Thrace region. He emphasized that the region should not lack transportation links, as this absence has serious economic and social impacts. Zeybek questioned, "Under these conditions, what development can the government speak of in the region, what support can it claim for Thrace, and how can it take pride in this?"

In a statement from Zeybek's political office, it was noted that the suspension of the railway connection began immediately after the New Democracy Party came to power in 2019. The MP recalled five questions he had submitted regarding this issue since 2019 and highlighted intergovernmental agreements signed by the previous government for the implementation of the 'Egnatia Railway.' He stressed that this project is critical for improving the infrastructure and transportation network in the regions of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, lamenting that it had once again fallen victim to the inaction of the Mitsotakis government.

Zeybek insisted that the government must resolve the railway issue, which is vital and economically significant for the local population and businesses. He expressed frustration over Staykuras’s vague and general response, which included references to the Nea Karvali - Toxotes and Pithio – Ormenio lines, stating that, "We will investigate whether there are opportunities for passengers in the current railway axis (Thessaloniki–Dedeagac) for the financing of this project."

After the minister's empty assurances and the government's indifference, the people of Xanthi and Thrace are left in uncertainty about when the train line will be operational again in their region.
