MP Zeybek raises issues of beekeepers in Xanthi

Highlighting the issues affecting beekeepers and honey production in Xanthi, MP Zeybek submitted a parliamentary question to the Ministry of Rural Development and Food. He inquired about what measures would be taken to address the problems faced by local beekeepers, particularly those impacted by climate change.
In his statement, Zeybek pointed out the significant decline in honey production this year, expressing concern over the dwindling bee populations, which play a crucial role not only in honey production but also in maintaining ecological balance. The main factors contributing to these issues were prolonged droughts and the negative conditions brought on by the climate crisis.
The President of the Xanthi Beekeepers Association echoed these concerns, noting that the region had been severely affected by climate change, with long dry periods, strong northern winds, and mild winters disrupting pollen production and causing a decline in bee populations. Additionally, beekeepers face challenges from predators that feed on bees, further hindering pollen collection. However, the damages caused by these factors, as well as the drought, are not covered by the Greek Agricultural Insurance Organization (ELGA), leaving beekeepers without compensation.
Moreover, despite a reduction in honey production, the prices remain stagnant, causing economic pressure on local producers. The issue of adulteration and tampering with local honey has also led to a quality and trust crisis in the market.
Based on these concerns, MP Zeybek posed the following questions to the Minister:
Does the ministry plan to take measures to support beekeepers affected by these adverse conditions through ELGA or other support mechanisms?
Will urgent measures be implemented to protect the beekeeping sector, which is critical for the ecological balance and agricultural economy of the Thrace region?
What steps will the government take to combat fraudulent practices in honey production and protect producers from these unfair practices?
What measures are planned to ensure fair prices in the sector to safeguard the income of small-scale producers?
