MP Zeybek criticizes the government for undermining ELGA and Agricultural Policies
Hüseyin Zeybek, an MP from the New Left Party representing Xanthi, harshly criticized the New Democracy Party (NDP) government for its policies that undermine the Hellenic Agricultural Insurance Organization (ELGA) and other public institutions. Zeybek stated that these policies have had devastating consequences for the agricultural sector.
In his parliamentary address, Zeybek highlighted that ELGA's workforce has been reduced from 565 to 355 employees since 2010. He pointed out that this reduction has severely hindered the organization’s ability to respond effectively, especially as the impacts of the climate crisis continue to intensify. He also noted delays in damage assessment reports in Thessaly and Thrace, leaving many farmers without compensation.
Zeybek posed several questions, including:
- When will compensation payments to farmers be made?
- Are there plans for De Minimis payments for crops like tobacco, cotton, and corn?
- How will unused EU agricultural funds be utilized for disaster relief?
He emphasized the need for ELGA's restructuring and a strong public system to provide substantial support for the agricultural sector.
