MP Burhan Baran warns livestock sector at ‘critical threshold’ after foot-and-mouth disease case
Burhan Baran, a member of parliament representing İskeçe, has issued a stark warning over the future of livestock farming following the confirmation of a new case of Foot-and-mouth disease in the region.
In a strongly worded statement, Baran criticized the government for failing to take timely and effective measures, arguing that the current situation has pushed producers toward a severe economic and operational संकट.
“A Crisis Years in the Making”
Baran said that previous outbreaks and animal health crises had not led to sufficient lessons or preparedness. He pointed to delayed interventions, weak preventive strategies, and limited financial support for farmers as key factors behind the escalation.
“The livestock sector is passing through a critical threshold,” he warned, adding that farmers’ herds and incomes are now under serious threat.
Ripple Effects Beyond Agriculture
According to Baran, the implications of the outbreak extend far beyond the agricultural sector. He stressed that Foot-and-mouth disease could trigger a chain reaction impacting the broader economy, food production systems, and regional stability.
“This crisis has the potential to deeply affect not only livestock farming but also the economy, food supply, and rural balance,” he said.
Rising Tensions Among Producers
Baran noted that frustration among farmers is growing, with protests already taking place in response to the worsening situation. Many producers, he said, now describe the crisis as a “struggle for survival.”
Calls for Urgent Government Action
The MP urged authorities to implement immediate and comprehensive measures, including:
- A robust prevention and control plan
- Strengthening veterinary services
- Fast and fair compensation mechanisms for affected farmers
- Transparent communication with producers
He warned that any further delays could have serious consequences for production, employment, and rural livelihoods.
A National, Not Local, Challenge
Concluding his remarks, Baran emphasized that the outbreak should not be seen as a localized issue.
“This is not just a regional problem—it is a matter that concerns the entire society,” he said, calling for coordinated and decisive action at the national level.
