Midnight attack on Western Thrace Turks Association in Witten sparks outrage
A community association representing Western Thrace Turks in the German city of Witten has been targeted in a late-night attack, triggering widespread condemnation and concern among local residents and diaspora organizations.
The Witten Western Thrace Turks Solidarity and Assistance Association was vandalized by unidentified individuals around 1:00 a.m. on April 19, according to initial reports. Authorities believe at least two suspects were involved in the incident.
Significant Damage and Theft Reported
The attack caused substantial material damage to the association’s premises. Several electronic devices inside the building were either damaged or rendered completely unusable. In addition, some small portable items were reportedly stolen, with investigations ongoing to determine the full extent of the losses.
Burak Bilal, president of the association, strongly condemned the incident, stating:
“We strongly denounce this ugly attack.”
The incident has led to widespread anger and concern among association members and the broader local community.
Police Launch Investigation
German police have launched a comprehensive investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible. Officials confirmed that efforts are ongoing to determine the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
Authorities emphasized that such provocations targeting social cohesion and community unity will not succeed, extending their support and well wishes to the association and affected individuals.
ABTTF Condemns Attack
The European Western Thrace Turks Federation (ABTTF) also issued a strong statement condemning the attack.
In its official declaration, the federation expressed solidarity with the Witten-based association and called on German authorities to swiftly clarify the incident and ensure that those responsible are prosecuted.
The statement read in part:
“On behalf of all Western Thrace Turks living in Europe, we strongly condemn this heinous attack against our member association. We expect the German authorities to promptly investigate the incident, identify the perpetrators, and bring them to justice.”
