Meriç: Mobile health units to cover villages and remote areas

A total of 16 Mobile Health Units out of the planned 250 will soon begin operating in villages, cities, islands, and mountainous regions across Greece. This initiative aims to provide free home medical and nursing care, especially for people in remote areas who lack access to healthcare facilities for preventive care or diagnosis.

Speaking to ERT, Deputy Minister of Health Irini Agapidaki observed the pilot operation of these units in the remote villages of Meriç and emphasized that the full implementation of the program will begin after Easter and be fully operational by the end of the year.

“We need to change our approach—healthcare professionals must go to the citizens, not the other way around,” Agapidaki stated.

The National Public Health Organization (EODY) will be responsible for the operation of the Mobile Health Units, which will have both regional and local coordinators. The units will include doctors from various specialties, nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and physiotherapists.

Additionally, Agapidaki announced plans for a redesign of Primary Healthcare, which will enable Local Health Units (TOMY) to provide home-based injections and even chemotherapy treatments for cancer patients.

This initiative marks a major step toward decentralized and accessible healthcare, ensuring that even the most isolated communities receive essential medical care.
