Local mayors visit Vienna through DIAAMATH
As part of its strategic planning for promoting the circular economy and sustainable management of solid waste, DIAAMATH S.A. carried out an educational visit to Vienna in late November 2025. The mission included the mayors of the municipalities of Kozlukebir, Drama, Yassıköy, Maroneia–Şapçı, Myki, Kumçiftliği, Bük (Paranesti), Prüsçan and Sofulu of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (REMTH).
The central objective of the visit was to gain an in-depth understanding of the integrated waste-management model implemented by the City of Vienna—considered one of the most advanced in Europe.
Visit to the Spittelau Waste-to-Energy Plant
At the heart of the mission was a guided tour of Vienna’s state-of-the-art Spittelau Waste-to-Energy facility. The plant processes approximately 250,000 tons of residual waste annually and contributes significantly to the city’s energy needs by supplying district heating, electricity, and district cooling. It also stands out as an iconic architectural landmark in Vienna.
During the site visit, participants observed the strict environmental standards applied at the facility, including the prioritization of public-health protection and the harmonious integration of infrastructure into the urban environment.
They also received detailed briefings on Vienna’s innovative source-separation systems and modern waste-processing technologies. Thanks to these practices, the city achieves recycling rates of up to 63% while having virtually eliminated the landfilling of untreated waste.
Visit to a Green Point Recycling Center
As part of the mission, DIAAMATH members also toured one of Vienna’s Green Point centers, where they examined first-hand the city’s methods for material collection, reuse, and preparation for recycling—core pillars of Vienna’s circular-economy system.
According to DIAAMATH, the mission offered valuable and enlightening insights, providing a solid foundation for designing and implementing more effective and sustainable waste-management policies across municipalities and the wider region.
Statement by Giorgos Papadopoulos
“This knowledge will support the upgrading of our infrastructure and services”
The Mayor of Drama and President of DIAAMATH S.A., Giorgos Papadopoulos, stated:
“Our visit to Vienna provided us with essential know-how on modern waste-management practices, with particular emphasis on source separation and energy recovery.
The European standards we observed strengthen DIAAMATH’s operational planning, which already includes major efforts toward more efficient and sustainable systems.
This knowledge will be used to further upgrade our infrastructure and services, aiming to reduce landfilling, increase recycling, and comply with contemporary environmental requirements.”
