Greece celebrates Independence Day with nationwide ceremonies on March 25
Celebrations began in the early morning with religious services held across the country, followed by official wreath-laying ceremonies at memorials. Political leaders, representatives of civil society organizations, and members of the police and armed forces participated in honoring the nation’s historical legacy.
While major cities hosted large-scale events, commemorations were also widely attended in smaller municipalities and villages, particularly in Western Thrace. In the city of Komotini, the official ceremony drew participation from local authorities and international representatives. Consulate General of Türkiye in Gümülcine was represented by Deputy Consul Umut Yamık, while the Greek government was represented by Vasiliki Pantelopoulou, Secretary General of the European Social Fund (ESPA).
A highlight of the day was the grand parade held in Komotini on Sunday morning. The procession featured civil society groups, private educational institutions, and students from various levels of education. Military units concluded the parade with a formal march. Minority schools also drew attention during the official ceremony, including students from Celal Bayar Minority Middle and High School and Hayriye Madrasa.
Similar events took place in İskeçe, where schools, associations, and military units participated in parades. Students from İskeçe Turkish Minority Primary School and İskeçe Minority Middle and High School also joined the celebrations, contributing to the day’s inclusive atmosphere.
The annual observance of March 25 remains one of Greece’s most significant national holidays, blending religious tradition with patriotic remembrance across the country.
