EBEP calls on Government: Where does Rhodope stand in development plans?
The Rhodope Chamber of Tradesmen and Artisans (EBEP) has raised concerns that Thrace—particularly Rhodope Prefecture—is being excluded from national development policies. In a comprehensive letter signed by EBEP President Theodoros Savvakis, the Chamber addressed the Prime Minister, relevant ministries, and local authorities, calling for clear and reasoned explanations.
In the letter, drafted on behalf of all small and medium-sized enterprises and professionals in the region, EBEP stressed that Rhodope’s insufficient inclusion in development plans covering Thrace is a serious source of concern. The Chamber highlighted long-standing economic and demographic challenges, including deindustrialization, population decline, the outmigration of young and skilled workers, and limited investment activity.
Despite these persistent issues, EBEP noted that Rhodope remains outside key national policy instruments and funding mechanisms. The Chamber posed two central questions to the authorities: why Rhodope, despite clearly requiring special support and strengthened interventions, has not been included in existing or forthcoming development plans; and on what criteria Rhodope has been excluded from population resettlement and demographic revitalization programs, while many other regions in Northern Greece are included.
The letter warned that Rhodope’s exclusion from such policies is heightening anxiety within the local community and business sector, deepening existing inequalities, and undermining prospects for sustainable development in the region.
EBEP called for a reassessment of the criteria used, the inclusion of Rhodope in relevant programs, and the creation of a comprehensive development framework that responds to the real needs of the local economy. The Chamber also emphasized its willingness to engage in dialogue and cooperation to promote balanced regional development and entrepreneurship across Thrace.
