Eastern Macedonia–Thrace unveils new tourism strategy at Regional Hotel Conference
The strategy, titled “Vision, Priorities and Perspectives,” was introduced by Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis, who emphasized the need to transform the region into a multi-themed and distinctive tourism destination rather than relying solely on mass tourism.
Tourism Leaders Gather at the Conference
The event brought together key figures from Greece’s tourism sector, including:
- Angelos Kallias, President of the Drama Hoteliers Association
- Antonis Micalis, President of the Kavala Hoteliers Association
- Yannis Hatzis, President of the Hellenic Hoteliers Federation
The discussion was moderated by journalist Apostolos Ancemidakis.
Key Strategic Priorities
According to Topsidis, the regional tourism strategy will focus on several key objectives:
- Promoting the region in new international markets
- Developing tourism throughout the entire year
- Enhancing tourism infrastructure, including the Falakro Ski Center
- Ensuring a balanced distribution of visitors across the region
- Creating an innovative tourism brand identity
New Tourism Brand: “Authentic Greece”
The regional administration is also developing a new tourism brand positioning the region as “Authentic Greece.”
A digital participation platform will allow tourism professionals and stakeholders to contribute to shaping tourism policy. The new brand will highlight the region’s natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and gastronomy.
€150 Million Infrastructure and Connectivity Plan
As part of the strategy, the region is planning €150 million in infrastructure investments aimed at strengthening tourism accessibility and sustainability.
Key projects include:
- Modernization of border crossings at Kipi Border Crossing and Kastanies Border Crossing along the Meriç border
- Urban redevelopment and sustainable mobility initiatives
- Development of the Egnatia Cultural Route
- Coordinated tourism management through a Destination Management Organization (DMO)
- Increased participation in major European tourism fairs
- Air connectivity will also be strengthened, particularly through improvements at Kavala International Airport and Dedeağaç International Airport.
Following participation in the Routes 2025 aviation forum, new flights from the United Kingdom are expected to begin in March, while connections to Germany are set to expand through the airline Eurowings.
“A Strategy That Goes Beyond Paper”
Topsidis stressed that the region’s tourism strategy is already moving from planning to implementation.
“Our tourism team in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace is strong and works with experts. Planning does not remain on paper—it is implemented. Our goal is development that creates value for society and leaves a long-term impact,” he said.
