Eastern Macedonia and Thrace council calls for preservation of prevention centers
The Regional Council of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace has unanimously approved a resolution calling for the continued operation of Prevention Centers across the region and Greece, citing their long-standing contribution to addiction prevention and the promotion of psychosocial health.
The resolution urges the Greek government to establish a clear legislative framework guaranteeing the uninterrupted operation of the centers beyond the expiration of their current program agreements in 2027. It also calls for stable and adequate funding as well as dialogue on the development of a comprehensive national prevention strategy.
According to the council, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace is home to five Prevention Centers, one in each regional unit. Growing concern has emerged over their future following recent reforms in mental health and addiction services.
Council members emphasized the important role the centers have played for more than two decades, providing prevention programs and educational initiatives for children, adolescents, parents, teachers and local communities. The resolution was approved unanimously, with one councillor abstaining during the vote.
