Democritus University establishes two new research institutes
The Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) has established two new research institutes under its University Center for Research and Innovation, aiming to strengthen scientific research, innovation and international cooperation.
The new institutes are the Institute of Population Research and the Institute for the Assessment and Management of Natural Hazards and Disasters, established under a government gazette published on June 12.
Focus on demographics and population trends
The Institute of Population Research, headed by Demography Professor Konstantinos Zafeiris, will study population dynamics, including birth rates, mortality, migration and ageing, as well as their social, economic and environmental impacts.
According to the university, it is the only university institute in Greece dedicated exclusively to population research. Its work will support public policy in areas such as healthcare, education, housing and resource allocation, while also providing research, educational programmes and advisory services at regional, national and international levels.
Research on natural hazards and disaster resilience
The Institute for the Assessment and Management of Natural Hazards and Disasters will be led by DUTH Rector and Civil Engineering Professor Fotios Maris.
The institute will focus on risk assessment, disaster prevention and resilience through interdisciplinary research, using geospatial data, remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS) and artificial intelligence. Its activities will also include early warning systems, civil protection policies, risk studies, public education and advisory services for public authorities.
