Dedeağaç “Dimokritos” Airport emerges as a strategic 24/7 emergency aviation hub

The “Dimokritos” Airport in Dedeağaç is strengthening its position as one of the most important transport, logistics, and strategic infrastructure hubs in northern Greece, operating with 24-hour readiness for emergency flights.

According to reports, the Dedeağaç Airport (Dimokritos) handles more than 18,000 aircraft movements annually and serves approximately 300,000 passengers, recording steady growth of around 10%. In 2025, the airport marked a record year with an 8% increase in passenger traffic, surpassing the national average and ranking 8th in domestic flight activity in Greece.

A Critical Infrastructure for Security and Mobility
The airport is described as one of the four key pillars of combined transport in the Thrace region, contributing significantly to economic development, civil protection, and national security.

Airport Director Stelios Zantanidis highlighted that Dimokritos serves as a vital infrastructure asset supporting both regional growth and broader strategic needs, including defense and emergency response operations.

24/7 Operational Readiness
One of the airport’s most distinctive features is its ability to activate operations 24 hours a day with just 30 minutes’ notice for emergency missions. These include:

  • Military and NATO operations
  • Medical evacuation flights
  • Firefighting and civil protection aircraft during wildfire season
  • State and security-related missions

It is currently the only airport in Greece with this level of continuous emergency readiness.

High-Level Certification and International Standards
Dimokritos Airport has received recognition from both national and international aviation authorities. It was among the first airports in Greece to be certified under EASA standards in January 2025, following comprehensive safety evaluations.

Authorities noted that nearly half of the audit findings have already been resolved within the first year of certification, with remaining improvements scheduled according to regulatory timelines.

Multi-Agency Operational Hub
The airport hosts 28 public and private organizations, including military, police, and civil aviation services. It also:

  • Supports NATO and Greek Armed Forces operations 24/7
  • Hosts aerial firefighting operations during the fire season
  • Maintains regular passenger flights to Athens, Sitia, and Heraklion
  • Operates pilot training schools with multiple aircraft based on-site
  • Houses border security and drone operation units linked to national security agencies

Officials emphasize that this multi-layered operational structure makes the airport a key contributor to both regional development and national security strategy.
