Clean energy and sustainable development in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region

On Thursday, April 10, 2025, the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace marked a significant milestone in its transition to a new era of clean energy and sustainable development. The inauguration of the natural gas distribution network in Orestiada was celebrated in a ceremony attended by local officials and representatives from the Greek Gas Distribution Company Enaon EDA, a subsidiary of Enaon, alongside the Regional Administration of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and the Municipality of Orestiada.

REGIONAL IMPACT OF THE NATURAL GAS PROJECT
The natural gas distribution network is a substantial infrastructure project with a total budget of €52.44 million. Of this amount, €26.15 million has been funded through European resources allocated by the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, while the remaining €26.29 million has been covered by Enaon EDA’s own funds. This project is set to revolutionize energy supply in the region by providing clean and efficient energy.

The project also includes a smaller but equally significant initiative in Orestiada, valued at €5.4 million. This component of the project has already been integrated into the new Operational Program for the 2021-2027 period, with completion expected by the end of 2025. To date, more than 60,000 meters of low-pressure network have been installed, with the project’s overall completion approaching 100%.

BENEFITS TO RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES
Regional Governor Christodoulos Topshidis highlighted the transformative impact of the natural gas project on both households and businesses. "This project is not just about infrastructure; over 160 families and businesses in Orestiada have already signed connection contracts, with many more expressing interest. Lower energy costs will give more freedom to family budgets," he emphasized.

CLOSING REMARKS
Governor Topshidis concluded by thanking the Greek Gas Distribution Company Enaon EDA for their collaboration and the Municipality of Orestiada for their support. He also paid tribute to the late Governor George Pavlidis, who strongly believed in the developmental potential of natural gas for the region.
