6 fires in one day in Xanthi

July in Xanthi started on Monday (01/07) with 5 separate fires that the Fire Brigade had to fight in just a few hours. The 6th fire, which broke out in the village of Gökçepınar in the mountainous region, could be extinguished with the limited means of the municipality and the intense efforts of the people.

Fires broke out in a house in Xanthi city centre, in Koyunköy, Sakarkaya, Mandra and just outside Serinmahalle. The fire brigade immediately mobilised to extinguish the fires and the firefighters once again fought the flames. The 6th fire in Gökçepınar village of Mustafçova Municipality was extinguished with the support of the municipality and the intense efforts of the people. While the fire caused panic, a major disaster could be prevented at the last moment.

According to the relevant map published by the General Secretariat, Xanthi is in the low category in terms of fire risk. However, this does not mean that the call centre of the Xanthi Fire Brigade is not working. On the contrary, the sirens of the fire trucks are heard almost every day in the city and all fires have been successfully and quickly brought under control so far.

In Mustafçova Municipality, since the state could not establish a fire brigade due to lack of funds, it is known that the fight against fires is left to the people's own efforts. Since it takes time for the fire brigade from the centre to arrive, fires often result in disastrous consequences.  Fortunately, although the fire in Gökçepınar caused fear, a major disaster was prevented by the efforts of the people. The people reiterated their call that it is time for the authorities to take the necessary steps for the establishment of an effective Fire Department in the region.
