2 big fires in Xanthi: 112 alarm sounds
On Sunday, 21 July, at noon, a warning message was sent from 112 for a large fire in the Sakarkaya (Lefkopetra) area of Xanthi. According to official information, a second major fire front broke out at the same time in Mandra, in the coastal area of Lefkopetra. While firefighters were battling the flames to bring the fires under control, air-assisted intervention teams were also mobilised.
112 Alarm Sounded in Lefkopetra
The first fire front occurred in Sakarkaya, quite close to the settlement, in the low vegetation in the forest area. Immediately 23 firefighters, a foot team of the 2nd EMODE, 6 vehicles, 2 fire extinguishing aircraft and a helicopter were dispatched to the area. Water tankers and construction equipment of the local administrations also supported the fire extinguishing works.
Residents of the village took to the streets in panic and were asked to be alert due to the fire with a message from 112 on their mobile phones at 14.30. The fire was brought under control after the struggle of the fire brigades, but the fire brigades kept watch in the area in case of re-ignition.
Black Smoke Cloud in Mandra
At the same time, another big fire broke out in Mandra, in the coastal region of Xanthi. The dense cloud of black smoke caused fear among the holidaymakers who were swimming in the crowded beaches of Avdira Municipality and the residents of the surrounding settlements.
While strong fire brigades were dispatched to the area, air-supported intervention teams were also mobilised and the fire was brought under control. This incident once again revealed the importance of fire fighting efforts in the region. Authorities continue to investigate the causes of the fires.
