Türkiye records over 53,000 earthquakes in 2025
Türkiye recorded 53,262 earthquakes in 2025, making it the country’s second most seismically active year since the devastating Feb. 6, 2023, Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes, according to disaster management expert Associate Professor Bülent Özmen.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Özmen said the data highlights Türkiye’s ongoing high earthquake risk, with an average of six tremors per hour and 146 per day nationwide.
A total of 437 earthquakes measured magnitude 4.0 and above during the year, including 20 between 5.0 and 6.0 and five between 6.0 and 6.9. “This means Türkiye experiences a magnitude 4 earthquake almost daily, a magnitude 5 quake roughly every 15 days, and a magnitude 6 quake about every 73 days,” Özmen said.
Balıkesir emerged as the most seismically active province, largely due to intense activity in its Sındırgı district, followed by Kütahya, Muğla, Malatya and Kahramanmaraş. The strongest quake of the year, a magnitude 6.2 event, struck off the coast of Silivri near Istanbul on April 23.
Özmen also highlighted unprecedented seismic activity in Sındırgı, where two magnitude 6.1 earthquakes occurred in August and October. Nearly 21,000 tremors were recorded there in about 4.5 months.
Earthquakes killed three people and injured 594 others in 2025, with all injuries attributed to panic rather than building collapses. Özmen warned that inadequate public preparedness and vulnerable building stock remain serious concerns, calling for accelerated urban transformation and expanded disaster awareness training across the country.
