Prisoner swap operation brings satisfaction to NATO, EU
NATO expressed satisfaction with the release of detainees from Russia during the operation managed by Türkiye's National Intelligence Organization (MİT). NATO spokesperson Farah Dakhlallah shared on the social media platform X, "Today, we welcome the release of some political detainees from Russia. The agreement securing their freedom was negotiated through the cooperation of NATO allies." Dakhlallah emphasized the importance of media freedom and the right to peaceful opposition for a functioning society, calling for the release of all those unjustly detained.
EU Commission President von der Leyen
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the exchange between Russia and Western states as "a moment of great joy." She stated on X, "I welcome the release of innocent EU and US citizens and honest Russian democrats held captive in Russia." Von der Leyen pointed out the stark contrast between those fighting for their freedom and those convicted of crimes, highlighting the significance of the exchange.
EU High Representative Borrell
Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, expressed relief over the release of several political prisoners, including EU citizens, with the assistance of Türkiye. In a written statement, Borrell noted that these individuals had been "unjustly persecuted, imprisoned, and held under unbearable conditions for political reasons." He called for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners still unjustly detained in Russia and Belarus.
