A growing number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Greece are embracing artificial intelligence (AI), according to a new survey by the National Bank of Greece

The report reveals that one in three SMEs has begun using AI tools, marking a significant shift in the country's digital transformation.

The study, titled “Artificial Intelligence as a Growth Catalyst for Greek Businesses,” highlights that most SMEs are using AI for basic applications like text and image generation. However, about one-third of these early adopters have moved beyond simple tools to more advanced applications such as data analysis, signaling a quiet but notable wave of innovation.

“This suggests that AI is no longer the exclusive domain of large corporations,” the report notes, underlining the growing accessibility of digital technologies for smaller businesses.

Still, the survey points to a large untapped potential. Nearly half of investment-active SMEs have not yet adopted any form of AI, despite its potential to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and open new market opportunities.

Analysts say greater awareness, training, and support will be key to helping more SMEs integrate AI into their operations—potentially unlocking new drivers of growth for the Greek economy.
