Zeybek urges government for emergency support in livestock sector

Hüseyin Zeybek, MP for Xanthi’s New Left Party, has called on the government to provide immediate assistance to livestock farmers and feed producers struggling due to the sheep plague outbreak, soaring feed costs, and quarantine measures.

In a parliamentary question addressed to Minister of Agriculture and Food Kostas Chiarras, Zeybek emphasized the severe financial burden on livestock enterprises, stating:

“Outbreaks like the sheep plague and the quarantine measures imposed to combat them have left livestock farmers desperate. The dramatic increase in feed prices and production costs is deepening the crisis. Producers urgently need support.”

Proposed Solutions

Zeybek outlined several measures to mitigate the crisis, including:

Free distribution of animal feed,
Compensation for livestock farmers,
Postponement of tax obligations.
He also stressed the importance of expediting support applications submitted to the European Commission.

Questions to the Minister of Agriculture
In his parliamentary question, Zeybek asked Minister Chiarras to clarify:

What immediate actions will the Ministry take to offset rising feed costs and financial losses caused by prolonged quarantines?
What is the status of the European Commission's application for additional feed cost subsidies, and when will payments be made?
Is the Ministry considering free feed distribution for livestock farmers?
Are there plans to compensate feed producers and cooperatives for unsold stocks?
What measures will ensure controlled feed transportation without endangering animal health?
Will the government postpone tax and social security obligations for affected livestock enterprises and cooperatives?

Call for Immediate Action
Zeybek urged the government to act swiftly to prevent the crisis from escalating further, emphasizing the need for decisive steps to rescue the livestock sector.

“The government must fulfill its responsibility to support producers and avert a disaster in the livestock industry,” Zeybek concluded.
