Western Greece records highest rainfall in wet 2025–2026 winter

Large parts of Greece experienced above-average rainfall during the winter of 2025–2026, according to data from the automatic weather station network of National Observatory of Athens via meteo.gr.

The highest rainfall totals were recorded in western Greece and along the Pindus Mountains.

The largest amount was measured in Theodoriana with 1,580 millimetres, followed by Megalohari (1,367 mm), Zotiko (1,338 mm) and Samaria–Xyloskalo with 1,269 mm.

In total, six monitoring stations recorded more than 1,200 mm of rainfall during the winter, while 40 stations registered more than 800 mm.

Meteorologists said rainfall in many areas of northern and central Greece was significantly higher than the 2010–2019 climate average, with some stations recording increases of 100–130%, meaning totals were more than double the normal levels. In the Mornos area, rainfall was about 60–70% above the seasonal average.

By contrast, parts of southern Greece, including areas of Crete, recorded rainfall close to or below normal levels.

Overall, researchers said the winter season was particularly wet across much of mainland Greece, while rainfall in southern island regions was more limited.
