Waters in the Mediterranean to warm up! Greece plans to take '12 miles' decision

In the news of the Ta Nea newspaper, it was pointed out that the plan to increase the territorial waters to 12 miles south and west of Crete has been since 2020.

Reminding that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias repeatedly stated that this decision would be taken at a time when it would serve the national interests, it was argued that the file on the subject was reopened.

In the news, it was claimed that the sources of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed to the month of March for action.

MITSOTAKIS APPROVED
In the news in the newspaper, it was stated that Athens will expand from the south and west of the island, not from the east, in order to avoid conflicts with Türkiye. While it was stated that the plan came out of the "drawer" of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was stated that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who plans to re-enter the seat in the elections next year, also approved this move.

THE PLAN TO EXTEND LAND WATER 12 MILES
Greek media reminded that both Mitsotakis and Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias had given the signal to increase the territorial waters in Crete to 12 miles and said, "We are ready to do it if it will serve the interests of the country."

ALLEGED SUPPORTED BY THE USA
Foreign Ministry sources told Ta Nea that this plan could be implemented in March next year. On the other hand, it was claimed in the news that the USA supported this plan. "The United States will also benefit the energy sector in the Eastern Mediterranean and support the resolution of problems and stabilization from the Balkans to the Middle East," the article said. While it was stated that the US-based ExxonMobil's investigations in the region continue and the US is closely interested in the situation in the region, it was also stated that Türkiye will not be disturbed if Crete expands from the south and west.
