Türkiye and Greece focus on $10 billion trade target

Türkiye and Greece, which have strengthened cooperation in many fields such as trade and tourism in recent years, are now focusing on increasing their bilateral trade volume to $10 billion.

According to information compiled by an Anadolu Agency (AA) correspondent, the “positive agenda” process launched between the two countries has the potential to accelerate cooperation in areas including health, environment, culture, arts, tourism, economy, and trade. The initiative, which aims to boost commercial relations, is expected to gain further momentum through mutual visits and cooperation agreements.

At the end of 2023, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Greece for the 5th High-Level Cooperation Council Meeting, held after a seven-year hiatus. During the meeting, the two sides set the goal of increasing bilateral trade volume to $10 billion. As mutual visits and talks intensified, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Turkey in 2024, where cooperation opportunities in trade, health, and culture were discussed.

As relations between the two countries have continued to improve, Mitsotakis is scheduled to visit Turkey on 11 February, during which the 6th High-Level Cooperation Council Meeting will be held. The meeting, to take place in Ankara under the chairmanship of President Erdoğan and Prime Minister Mitsotakis with the participation of relevant ministers, will comprehensively review Turkey–Greece relations and explore ways to further advance bilateral cooperation.

Within the scope of the visit, the signing of various agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations is also expected.

Türkiye Maintains Exporter Status
Foreign trade between the two countries has shown steady growth in recent years. Turkey’s exports to Greece increased from $3.1 billion in 2021 to $3.3 billion in 2022. A notable rise was observed in 2023 and 2024, when diplomatic contacts intensified. Exports to Greece approached $4.2 billion in 2023 and exceeded $4.8 billion in 2024. In 2025, exports nearly reached $5.4 billion, representing a 71.9% increase over the 2021–2025 period.

Turkey’s imports from Greece fluctuated during the same period but stood at $1.3 billion in 2025.

Total bilateral trade volume amounted to $5.3 billion in 2021, rising to $5.5 billion in 2022, $5.8 billion in 2023, and $6.2 billion in 2024. The upward trend continued in 2025, with trade volume reaching $6.7 billion, bringing the two countries closer to their $10 billion target. Turkey maintained its position as a net exporter, recording a trade surplus of approximately $4.1 billion in 2025.

Mineral Fuels Lead Exports
In Turkey’s exports to Greece last year, the leading category was “mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes,” totaling $1.8 billion.

This was followed by iron and steel with $422.7 million, and electrical machinery and equipment, sound and television recording and broadcasting apparatus with $387.5 million.
