Turkish-Greek Romeo and Juliet to be premiered in Ankara

In partnership with the well-established art institutions of Türkiye and Greece, Rome and Juliet will be performed in Ankara on 19 April.
Turkish-Greek Romeo and Juliet to be premiered in Ankara

According to a statement released by the General Directorate of Turkish State Theatres (DT), Romeo and Juliet, the work of English poet and playwright William Shakespeare, will meet theatre lovers on both sides of the Aegean with the joint project of DT and Athens Concert Hall Megaron and Yorgos Likiardopulos cultural organisation Likofos from Greece.

Lefteris Giovanidis, one of the directors of Piraeus Municipal Theatre, will be the director of the production, and DT will be represented by four artists and a lighting director, as well as a composer from the Turkish Presidential Symphony Orchestra.

In the project, Shakespeare's poetic work will be adapted to the present day and the love story of Turkish Romeo and Greek Juliet will be represented in a Balkan city.

The project aims to strengthen peace, understanding and cooperation between Türkiye and Greece through artistic and cultural interaction.

Romeo and Juliet in Shakespeare's work will be brought to the stage by Kalliopi Haska and Alp Ünsal.

Romeo Juliet, which will premiere in Ankara on 19 April 2024, will continue to meet its audience with the gala at the Megaron Athens Concert Hall in Greece on 16 May 2024, following the screenings in Istanbul.
