Local authorities in the Greek capital are in an uproar over the hefty waste management fees set by the Association of Attica Municipalities (EDSNA), for both annual contributions and landfill levies for 2024-2025, partially collected via electricity bills.

Municipalities face staggering costs: Athens, producing 152,500 tons of waste in early 2024, owes €35.2 million in EDSNA contributions and landfill fees. Piraeus must pay €8.8 million. Other municipalities, including Kifissia and Glyfada, face burdens proportional to their waste production.

Mayors warn of fiscal collapse, citing inability to meet these demands. Athens’ mayor, Haris Doukas, lamented a 50% hike in costs over 2024, calling the policy unsustainable. EDSNA defends its actions, citing adherence to national laws.

Tensions are high as local governments threaten legal challenges, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable waste management reforms amid mounting costs and administrative disputes.
