Pediatric hospitals across Greece are experiencing a sharp rise in respiratory infections during the holiday season, with hundreds of children visiting daily due to flu, RSV, and other viral illnesses. Emergency room visits are reported to be up 20% compared to November.

Experts predict the viral wave will peak after the holidays, toward the end of January. The increase is not limited to children, as pharmacies are also reporting a surge in influenza A infections among adults, with higher demand for antiviral medications. Dionysis Evgenidis, president of the Thessaloniki Pharmaceutical Association, noted the significant rise in positive rapid flu tests.

Elsa Kaloudi, president of the Freelance Pediatricians of northern Greece, stressed the importance of prevention. She urged vulnerable groups—including children under five and those with underlying health conditions—to get vaccinated, even at this stage of the season. RSV prevention through vaccination of pregnant women is also available.

According to ekathimerini, medical experts emphasize that vaccination, early medical evaluation, and limiting unnecessary social contacts remain key strategies to reduce the spread of respiratory infections during the peak winter months.
