Record 20,000 complaints filed with Greek Ombudsman in 2025
More than 20,000 complaints were submitted to the Greek Ombudsman in 2025, marking the highest annual total since the independent authority began operating in 1998.
According to the watchdog, citizens sought assistance on a broad range of issues, highlighting persistent administrative and bureaucratic challenges. Complaints included allegations of illegal waste management in Aspropyrgos, delayed state payments to suppliers, and even the exclusion of a resident from a municipality’s social media account.
A review of cases handled between September and December 2025 showed that many disputes were resolved following the Ombudsman’s intervention. In some instances, although complainants did not achieve their preferred outcome, public authorities were prompted to address systemic shortcomings.
Among notable cases, a resident of Aktio-Vonitsa who had waited two years for a household water connection obtained access within two months after the Ombudsman contacted local authorities. In another case, a wildfire-affected homeowner in the Athens area received a long-delayed repair permit and the first installment of housing assistance after intervention, with earlier delays linked to administrative complexities.
