Poor score for municipalities

The performance of Greece’s municipal authorities leaves a lot to be desired, according to an evaluation for 2024 conducted by the Center for Liberal Studies (KEFIM) think-tank, which gave them an average efficiency score of just 30.6 out of 100.

The study, which evaluates performance in five areas, found that where municipalities lag most is in sustainable waste management and other green practices, giving a score of just 17.6/100. In civil protection, they scored 24.9, in the quality of services 27.6, and in organization and governance 32.7. The best performance, albeit still wanting, was in financial management, at 50.3.

The survey used Interior Ministry data and questionnaires.

According to Kathimerini, the information used to gauge performance is based on Interior Ministry data and questionnaires. It is worth noting that just 74 municipalities, or one in four, filled in the questionnaires for the 2024 survey.

The municipal authorities that had the best performance were those of Lykovrissi-Pefki, Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni, Lokroi, Agios Vasileios, Salamina and Angistri.
