North Macedonia to sign joint declaration for Budapest-Athens High-Speed Railway
North Macedonia, along with Hungary, Serbia, and Greece, will sign a joint declaration for the construction of a high-speed railway connecting Budapest to Athens. Serbian Minister of Transport, Construction, and Infrastructure Goran Vesic announced that the signing will take place on November 23, 2024. This ambitious project, which forms part of the European railway network, aims to facilitate swift and efficient travel across multiple Balkan nations.
Vesic detailed that the railway will run from Hungary through Serbia to Greece, with a newly proposed section linking Novi Sad and Subotica. This initiative aligns with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic’s vision of expanding regional rail infrastructure. Vesic also mentioned efforts to secure joint funding with North Macedonia for the segment stretching from the Serbian border to Skopje.
This high-speed line is expected to enhance connectivity and boost trade and tourism between Central and Southeastern Europe.
