‘No Helmet, No Gasoline’ road safety campaign targets motorcyclists
Over the next few days, the gasoline stations federation is expected to inform dozens of affiliated industry associations throughout the country to urge service station owners and their staff not to serve motorcyclists who turn up without wearing helmets.
In the lead-up, Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis reportedly reached an agreement on the campaign at a meeting with members of the gasoline stations federation.
Despite various safety measures, numerous motorcyclists in Greece continue to be seen riding without helmets, often with helmetless passengers.
According to health ministry data, nine in 10 persons admitted to hospitals in Greece with serious head injuries sustained them in road accidents.
“I believe that the 46 associations registered with the federation will support this decision and contribute to reducing injuries from traffic accidents,” Maria Zaga, Vice President of the Gasoline Stations Federation, told Kathimerini.
The joint campaign, which is expected to continue with more actions, was prompted by the recent death of a 17-year-old motorcyclist in Crete, which led the owner of a service station on the island to refuse to serve riders who arrived at his station without helmets.
