Fifteen members of the New Left party were detained by Greek police on Wednesday after unfurling a Palestinian flag at the Acropolis, in what the group described as a peaceful demonstration of solidarity with the people of Gaza.

In a statement, the New Left condemned the arrests and called for the immediate release of the detained activists. “The struggle for peace and solidarity with Palestine is not a crime, it is a right and a duty,” the party said, accusing the Greek government of remaining complicit through its silence on the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The demonstration coincided with a regional conference on Greece-Israel cooperation taking place in central Athens, where an unrelated protest involved paint being thrown at the venue’s facade.

Main opposition party SYRIZA also voiced support for the New Left demonstrators, demanding their release and backing calls for a ceasefire.

The event underscores growing activism in Greece as global calls intensify for an end to hostilities in Gaza.
