SYRIZA urges immediate halt to Gaza conflict, calls for recognition of Palestinian state

SYRIZA–Progressive Alliance, a left-wing opposition party in Greece, on Tuesday issued a strong statement condemning what it described as genocide in Gaza, while criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s reported intentions regarding the enclave.

In its statement, SYRIZA warned that the “total occupation of Gaza” by Israeli forces would amount to a “crime aiming at the total extermination of Palestinians.” The party described the current developments as a “massacre, genocide, famine, and total occupation”, calling it “the most nightmarish scenario imaginable.”

SYRIZA called on the Greek government and the international community to “stop the genocide now” and to push for the immediate recognition of an independent Palestinian state.

“This must be the response of the Greek government and the international community to the State of Israel,” the statement said, urging Athens to end what it called a ‘one-sided support’ for Israel.

The party also encouraged the government to lead peace initiatives, using Greece’s current non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. SYRIZA referenced a December 2015 resolution passed by the Hellenic Parliament during its time in office, supporting the establishment of a Palestinian state.

The statement comes amid mounting international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and increasing calls for a ceasefire and a long-term political resolution.
