In response to declining birth rates, the Municipality of Apokoronas on the Greek island of Crete has taken a significant step by introducing a financial aid program for newborns. Starting January 1, 2026, the municipality will provide between €1,500 and €2,500 for each new child, aiming to encourage population growth in the region.

Mayor Haralambos Koukianakis highlighted the nationwide demographic challenges in an interview with MEGA channel, stating:

"We cannot ignore this issue affecting our entire country. Our town's population decline demands action. This initiative represents our commitment to reversing the trend and supporting local families."

Financial Aid Details:
Income Requirement: Family income must not exceed €20,000 annually.
Payment Amounts:First child: €1,500
Second child: €2,000
Third child: €2,500
Despite limited resources, the municipality views this program as a crucial investment in its community. Koukianakis emphasized:
"Our goal is to support families and offer a brighter future for our children while encouraging young people to stay in the region and start families."

This initiative aims to address demographic challenges and foster local economic and social stability.
