Municipality of Komotini issues weather warning amid incoming INES System

The Municipality of Komotini has issued a public warning to residents regarding severe weather conditions expected to affect the region due to the INES weather system, which originated off the coast of Tunisia and is moving northeastward, bringing stormy conditions across Greece.

According to a bulletin released by the municipality, the adverse weather is expected to begin on Thursday night (May 15) and last through Saturday morning (May 17). The system, named INES by the Italian Meteorological Service, is forecast to cause heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds across various parts of the country.

A. Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms

Thursday night into Friday morning:

  • Ionian Islands: Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Ithaca
  • Northwestern Peloponnese
  • Western and Central Greece
  • Thessaly

Friday afternoon through evening:

  • Northern Ionian Sea (Corfu, Diapontia Islands, Paxoi, Lefkada)
  • Epirus
  • Western Greece
  • Western and Central Macedonia

Friday night through Saturday morning:

  • Eastern Macedonia
  • Thrace region
  • Northeastern Aegean Islands, especially Lemnos

B. Gale-Force Winds (up to 8–9 Beaufort)

Throughout Friday:

  • Aegean Sea and Crete

Until Friday midday:

  • Southern Ionian Sea
  • Southern Peloponnese

C. African Dust Transport
Meteorological conditions are also favorable for the transport of dust from North Africa, particularly affecting Crete, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, and southern Peloponnese.
