Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Monday that Greece’s 3% threshold for entering Parliament will remain unchanged, dismissing speculation about possible changes to the electoral system ahead of upcoming elections.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting, Mitsotakis stressed that political stability is a national priority amid growing international uncertainty, underlining that the government does not intend to alter the “rules of the game.”

“In times when tomorrow sails in uncharted waters, political stability becomes a national necessity,” he said.

Although rumors have circulated about potential electoral reforms, government sources say any changes have been definitively ruled out for now, with the prime minister opposed to modifying existing arrangements.

Mitsotakis also outlined plans to create a new electoral district for Greeks living abroad, calling it a “significant step for democracy and modernization.” Under the proposal, expatriate voters would be able to elect specific lawmakers, not just choose a party.

The plan calls for a three-seat constituency for the diaspora, with nationwide party-list seats reduced from 15 to 12 to preserve proportionality.

Mitsotakis said consultations with political parties are under way and expressed confidence the constitutional requirement of 200 MPs could be met.
