Meeting held in Athens to address sheep pox outbreak
Greek Minister of Rural Development and Food, Kostas Tsiaras, led a large-scale meeting with representatives from livestock associations and cooperatives across the country to discuss the ongoing sheep pox outbreak.
During the meeting, Tsiaras emphasized the shared responsibility in combating the disease, stating, "I eagerly anticipate your support and cooperation. Our goal is unified." The discussions focused on controlling the spread of the disease, and Tsiaras stressed the need for collective action.
Other topics included strengthening the livestock sector, boosting exports to third countries, addressing the shortage of veterinary staff in rural areas, improving spatial planning and land use, and supporting livestock farming.
Tsiaras highlighted the potential for Greece’s livestock industry to grow, noting that increased training in new technologies for farmers could unlock significant opportunities. The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister Hristos Kellas, Secretary-General Yorgos Stratakos, Director-General of Veterinary Services Thomas Alexandropoulos, and representatives from 15 unions, cooperatives, and associations from across Greece.
