Media urged to comply with new transparency law

Authorities have called on media owners to comply immediately with a new law requiring transparency in ownership and state advertising revenue.

In a circular issued Tuesday, Dimitrios Kirmikiroglou, General Secretary of Communication and Information, said all media outlets—traditional and digital—must clearly disclose ownership details and publicly report income from state advertising.

The measure is part of Law 5253/2025, Greece’s implementation of the European Media Freedom Act aimed at safeguarding media pluralism and editorial independence across the EU.

Media companies are also required to publish their 2025 financial results by June 30, 2026, with some exemptions, including listed firms and certain regulated investment entities.

Oversight will be carried out by the National Radio and Television Council, which can impose penalties for non-compliance.

Authorities stressed that immediate implementation is essential to strengthen public trust in the media and urged industry bodies to inform their members without delay.
