Karamanlis Warns: ‘Greece may be dragged into irreversible subjugation by Türkiye’
Former Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis has issued a stark warning regarding Türkiye’s regional policies, describing the country as a "destabilizing actor" and cautioning that Greece may face “irreversible subjugation” if it fails to convey this threat effectively to the international community.
Speaking at the launch event of journalist Stavros Ligeros’ new book, “The Hidden Faces of the Ukraine War”, Karamanlis accused Turkey of blatantly violating international law and treaties, and stressed the urgent need for Greece to clearly articulate these actions on the world stage.
“If we do not inform the international community properly, Turkey’s aggressive and revisionist policies could permanently destabilize the regional balance,” he stated.
Karamanlis also criticized Ankara's reaction to Greek infrastructure projects in the Aegean Sea.
“The suspension of power connection projects for our islands in the middle of the Aegean is irrational,” he said. “Even basic infrastructure developments are coming under Turkish aggression. This shows how far Turkey is willing to go and how direct a threat it poses to Greek sovereignty.”
"SOVEREIGNTY IN THE AEGEAN IS NON-NEGOTIABLE"
Karamanlis denounced recent marine park proposals that excluded certain Greek islands, calling this “unacceptable.”
“There can be no negotiations with Türkiye over these central Aegean areas,” he declared, urging the Athens government to act with firm resolve.
He also described as “unbelievable audacity” Türkiye’s submission of a Marine Spatial Plan to UNESCO that portrays half of the Aegean Sea as falling under Turkish jurisdiction.
"EUROPE’S DOUBLE STANDARDS UNACCEPTABLE"
Karamanlis sharply criticized the European Union as well, arguing that including Türkiye in the EU’s future defense mechanisms would amount to gross hypocrisy.
“The EU cannot remain neutral in the face of a country that occupies 37% of Cyprus and threatens Greece with war on a daily basis,” he said, emphasizing that the Union must adhere to its founding principles and international law.
"THE WEST HAS SUFFERED A STRATEGIC DEFEAT IN UKRAINE"
Concluding his remarks, Karamanlis turned to the ongoing war in Ukraine, arguing that the prolonged conflict is weakening both Kyiv and the EU.
“This is a strategic defeat for the collective West,” he concluded.
