High prices: 4 in 10 consumers to spend less on holiday shopping

The retail market is counting down to the New Year, with increased foot traffic on major shopping streets as consumers complete their final purchases of the year. Shopping activity is expected to peak by Wednesday.

According to ANT1, despite the crowded commercial districts, consumers are buying gifts for their loved ones with great caution, carefully tracking every euro and conducting extensive price comparisons before making purchases.

Market data indicate that this year, 4 in 10 consumers will spend less than last year on gifts, cosmetics, and books.

Despite a relatively subdued performance during the holiday season—mainly attributed to reduced purchasing power—estimates suggest that consumers will still spend significant amounts across key product categories.

Spending by Product Category

  • Electrical & electronic goods: €670 million
  • Clothing: €620 million
  • Footwear: €310 million
  • Toys: €270 million
  • Cosmetics: €230 million
  • Watches: €180 million
  • Books: €140 million

In addition, consumers are expected to spend approximately 2.5% to 5% more in the holiday market compared to 2024, largely due to inflation and rising prices. However, in terms of volume, shoppers are purchasing the same number—or even fewer—items than last year.

Following the holiday period, winter sales are set to begin on January 12 and will run until the end of February.
