Cross-border shopping surge: Northern Greece faces challenges after Bulgaria joins Schengen Zone

The article in enikos.gr highlights the increasing flow of Greek citizens to Bulgaria for shopping, fuel, and cosmetic procedures following Bulgaria's and Romania's inclusion in the Schengen Zone on January 1, 2025. Price differences in fuel, food, and retail products have raised concerns among businesses in Northern Greece, particularly in the Rodopi region, where local professionals are witnessing a decline in their revenues.

The President of the Rodopi Chamber of Commerce, Theodoros Savvakis, emphasizes the importance of implementing measures such as reducing the Special Consumption Tax. He also stresses the need to intensify customs inspections after their recent upgrades, while expressing hope for a recovery during the tourist season.

In Xanthi and Serres, the situation remains more stable, mainly due to geographical limitations or the pre-existing habit of traveling for cheaper fuel. Despite the increased mobility, local representatives remain optimistic due to the superior quality of Greek products and their readiness to address potential challenges in the future.
